The RDA — the officially recommended intake — is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 180-pound man, that's about 65 grams a day. The RDA is set to prevent deficiency, not to support optimal function. And it was set based on studies of young, sedentary populations. For active adults over fifty, it's almost certainly wrong.

Here's what the current evidence actually supports.

The real target for active adults over 50

Current consensus among researchers who study aging and protein metabolism is somewhere between 1.2 and 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day for active adults over fifty. For a 180-pound person, that's 100 to 130 grams of protein per day. For a 150-pound person, 82 to 110 grams.

That's roughly double the RDA.

The reason for the higher target is a phenomenon called anabolic resistance. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at using protein to build and maintain muscle. Younger adults can trigger muscle protein synthesis with a modest protein meal. Older adults need a larger dose to trigger the same response. Lunch (30-40g): A palm-sized portion of chicken, fish, or beef. Or a couple of hard-boiled eggs on top of a big salad. Or two scoops of quality protein in a smoothie.

Dinner (30-40g): Fish, steak, chicken, pork — protein-forward, with vegetables and starch playing supporting roles.

Snack or fourth meal (20-30g): Optional but useful. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, a protein shake, or a small serving of protein-rich food.

For most active adults over fifty in Palm Beach County, this represents a meaningful shift in how they've been eating. The change usually feels dramatic in the first month — muscle recovery from training improves, energy stabilizes, and (counterintuitively) fat loss often accelerates because protein is highly satiating and helps preserve lean mass during any dietary adjustment.

• Fish (especially wild salmon, cod, tuna)

• Greek yogurt (plain, not flavored)

• Cottage cheese

Plant proteins can work but require more volume and more careful combining to hit the amino acid profile needed for muscle synthesis. If you're plant-based, you'll need to eat more total protein — closer to 1.6-1.8 grams per kilogram — and rely on complete sources like soy, quinoa, and hemp.
